eTeam Picks Challenge–Altered Box!

2013 January 20

Yay, I finally finished my project for eclectic Paperie’s first eTeam Picks Challenge with  Margi Kemper as your hostess.  Margi’s pick for this challenge theme is Altered Boxes.   The challenge went live this past Thursday and after several failed attempts – and not to mention ruined (for now) boxes, I gave up and went with plain ‘ole Clean and Simple.

My friend Rhonda gave me a gorgeous COACH phone bag and it came in this awesome box.

And because I could not get my previous attempts to come out the way I wanted to, I took the minimalistic approach.   Since I just received an eP goodies box from Kim, I was thrilled to see that the colors from my new Kaisercraft’s Secret Admirer 6×6 paper pack matched the color hue of the red box.

With my previous altered box mishaps, I decided to just alter the top of the lid box to hide the Coach logo.  Before adhering the paper, I took the Silver Paint Dabber and using a ruler ran a thin edging along the paper edges to mirror the silver edges of the lid box.

I then checked my tray of homemade flowers and especially my rolled zipper flowers. Did I mention that I found a whole big bag full of metal zippers at a flea market last summer?  Anyway, I was determined to incorporate those.

I keep any extra homemade flowers in a large glass jar and found an extra large one.  The flower was a left over from a wedding frame and was a silver/gray color.  I spritzed the flower with Dylusions Ink Sprays which actually gave the paper flower a sort of purple hue.  Not what I was going for.  Claudine Hellmuth  acrylic paints to the rescue.  I used my finger to swipe Modern Red all over the pedals.  That worked.  And the little bit of pinkish purple still showing on some of the petals worked to my advantage because it kinda ties the pink zipper flower in.

The little red strands are from the flower aisle at the craft store.  No clue what they are called, I’ve had them for a while.  Either way, they worked great as a “filler”.Altered Box view 5

The leaves are….are you ready for this…… aluminum foil covered with tissue paper.  Because the green tissue paper was way too bright, I smeared some Sable Brown paint followed byAdirondack’s Lettuce paint.

The die cut tag is also from Kaisercraft’s Secret Admirer pack.  Stamp is from Unity Stamp Co..  Added some seam binding and twine to the tag and a few other embellishments and finally my altered box was done.

Altered Box

I left the inside unaltered.  Figured I better stop before I ruin a perfectly good altered box.  Besides, I have lots of colored tissue paper which will work perfectly.

And then I did a happy dance because I did it. I did not let the previous four failed altered boxes get the best of me, lo. Ok, so I’m a couple of days late BUT if you signed up for eclectic Paperie’s newsletter, you’re already in the know and have seen Margi’s awesome altered box on the eP blog. Head over there to get all the details of this awesome challenge and get inspired.

You know you’ve got some boxes that are just screaming to be altered!

I checked out the challenge blogs and think this altered gift box will fit in with the following challenges:

That does it for me tonight.

Until next time…..

Good idea colouring the foil leaves with tissue, works for firming the tissue to hold a shape too. I love your huge flower, the spritzing and painting looks great on it.
